Migraine Protocol.

Efficacy: Level 4 Modality: Thermal

Thermal biofeedback is particularly effective for vascular migraines. By voluntarily increasing peripheral blood flow (vasodilation), sympathetic nervous system arousal is decreased.

Thermal Biofeedback (Hand Warming)

Clinical Targets

  • Placement: Palmar surface of the distal phalanx of the dominant index finger.
  • Baseline: Migraineurs often exhibit resting peripheral temperatures below 88.0°F.
  • Target: Increase peripheral temperature to > 94.0°F (34.4°C) within 15 minutes.

When the patient can successfully raise peripheral temperature into the target zone without feedback equipment, they are instructed to apply the skill at the earliest prodromal signs of a migraine.
